Traditions are in abundance in almost every college and university, but in Caltech they are not centered around ancient hymns or sports charms. In many student dormitories, “houses”, common dinners with seating, which are served by students, waiters. In addition, each of the houses during the school year holds an “interhouse” party. Moreover, each house has its own unique traditions. So, students living in the Flems shoot their cannon several times a year; for every Halloween, Dabney House throws a huge pumpkin from the roof of the Milikan Library building, the highest point of the campus; before the winter holidays, students from Lloyd decorate the library building with light garlands, creating a “light fir”.
