The Graz University of Karl-Franz is one of Austria’s oldest and largest universities. The institution is associated with many distinguished names, in particular, six Nobel laureates studied here. To the attention of students – a wide selection of training courses in various fields. The university management constantly cooperates with other scientific and educational institutions for the purpose of cultural, economic and scientific exchange. The university, together with other well-known European universities, is part of the Utrecht Network association.

History of University
Graz University was founded in 1585 by Archduke Charles II. At first, there were two faculties: philosophical and legal. In 1782 the university was turned into a lyceum, but in 1827 its status was renewed thanks to Emperor Franz I, and in 1863 another faculty appeared – the medical faculty.

A thriving scientific life stopped in 1938. Famous scientists and many students left the university because of the Nazis. However, from 1960 to this day, the number of students has been constantly growing.

In 2004, the Faculty of Medicine gained independence, and in 2007 the Faculty of Ecology, Regional Studies and Education was opened.

Today at Graz University there are six faculties:

– jurisprudence;
– business, economics and social sciences;
– ecology, regional studies and education;
– arts and humanities;
– natural sciences.

Students have the opportunity to choose from about 120 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. Interestingly, the Slavic Institute, one of the oldest in the region, also operates at the university. They study the South and East Slavic culture. The university has a unique library with more than 4 million books and magazines.

The university employs about 3,000 scientists from various fields of science. Fritz Pregl (Nobel Prize in Chemistry), Julius Wagner-Yauregg (Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine), Erwin Schrodinger (Nobel Prize in Physics), Otto Levy (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine), Victor are associated with the university Franz Hess (Nobel Prize in Physics), Carl von Frisch (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine).

Student Life at the University of Graz Karl-Franz

The main building of the university is a real masterpiece of Baroque architecture. On the campus are concentrated classrooms, student information center “4students“. Here, students and everyone can get individual recommendations and the necessary information about the university and training – in person, by phone, skype, email or via the website.

While studying at the university, students have the opportunity to work part-time or full-time to get additional qualifications, primary experience in the field of a future profession, or to pay for training. To facilitate the search for work, there is a special Employment Center. There is also a Young Parent Support Center on the territory where you can leave your child for the duration of classes at the university.

A modern sports center offers opportunities for professional sports and physical education. Students can choose from a variety of sections, including alternative ones, from football to zumba. Here are courses for athletes of all levels. To encourage students to pay more attention to physical exercises, various events are held. For example, the annual Kleeblatt – Cloverleaf Race race, in which several thousand runners take part.

The small Mensae, a student bistro located just off campus, offers delicious meals at affordable prices.

Admission and study conditions at the University of Graz Karl-Franz
To enter the university it is necessary to submit documents on education, fill out a questionnaire, attach a resume and a motivation letter, as well as a document that confirms the opportunity to study at a chosen specialty at a university in your country.

You can study in German or English. In both cases, the student will have to confirm their knowledge with a certificate or pass an exam. To study in German, you need Goethe Zertifikat no lower than B2 level. For English, you will need a TOEFL certificate (at least 87 points), or IELTS (at least 6.5).

During admission to most specialties, you do not need to take exams. The exceptions are psychology, economics, pharmacy, biology.

Tuition at Graz University of Karl-Franz
