University of Malaya

University of Malaya (UM) – the oldest and most prestigious university in Malaysia – is located in the capital of the country, the city of Kuala Lumpur. In the QS World University Rankings for 2019, UM is in 87th place, rising from 114th place in 2018. The University of Malaya, together with the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University, has developed a one-year graduate program in medical research ethics (MOHRE). This collaborative initiative came about as the number of health research studies is increasing worldwide.

Graduates of the MOHRE program will have the skills and competencies necessary to solve the ethical problems associated with scientific research in this field. They will be able to work as teachers and researchers at universities, members of ethics expert councils at various institutions, publishers editors, medical center researchers, and officials of bioethics organizations.

The Berman Institute employs more than 30 visiting and full-time faculty members from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, the Paul H. Nietze School of Advanced International Studies, and the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

The MOHRE program is supported by the Fogarty International Center at the US National Institutes of Health in partnership with Johns Hopkins University. The center provides scholarships to foreign students from Southeast Asian countries (Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines) with low or middle income levels that meet the requirements for program participants.

This scholarship covers the cost of training, the cost of acquiring textbooks and teaching materials, as well as the costs associated with a student’s research project. Foreign students receive additional funds to pay for accommodation, as well as to cover transportation and operating expenses.
